Review by Scott Yanow
On LP there were four volumes released under the title of "Jazz for a Sunday Afternoon"; some of the music has since been reissued on CD under Dizzy Gillespie's name. This particular CD has three long performances (two are over 22 minutes long and were originally edited for LP while the 15-minute "Bachafillen" was never released before) by a pickup group featuring trumpeter Marvin Stamm, trombonist Garnett Brown, Joe Farrell on tenor, pianist Chick Corea, bassist Richard Davis and drummer Elvin Jones. Recorded live at the Village Vanguard, there are some strong moments from these fine players during the lengthy renditions but nothing all that surprising or explosive occurs. |
