If there was a non-Latino King of Latin music it was the vibist Cal Tjader. Enamored of Latin rhythms while with George Shearing's quintet in the early-'50s, this gringo of Scandanavian descent nurtured an innovative Latin-jazz concept until his death in 1982. Tjader was one of the music's most popular and prolific bandleaders, recording dozens of important albums for a variety of labels -- his '60s work on Verve is well worth investigating. This 78-minute live CD, originally two LPs, features one of the great tandems in Latin music history -- conguero Mongo Santamaria and timbalero-drummer {|Willie Bobo|}, both of whom had recently left Tito Puente's Orchestra for Tjader's band. This breezy set of standards and originals -- including an early airing of Santamaria's classic "Afro Blue" -- finds Tjader and company -- flutist Paul Horn, bassist Al McKibbon, and pianist Lonnie Hewitt-- snuggling right into the tight Santamaria-Bobo rhythmic cushion. This CD (which reissues all of the music from the two LPs Concert by the Sea and Vol. 2) is the definitive early Cal Tjader album and one of the high points of his career. For a Carmel concert that was considered a preview concert for the 1959 Monterey Jazz Festival, Tjader was teamed up with flutist and altoist Paul Horn, pianist Lonnie Hewitt, bassist Al McKibbon, Willie Bobo (on drums and timbales), and percussionist Mongo Santamaria. Their renditions of Latinized jazz tunes along with a few Latin originals practically define the idiom. Highlights include "Doxy," one of the earliest versions of Santamaria's "Afro Blue" (predating John Coltrane's famous rendition by four years), "Love Me or Leave Me," and "A Night in Tunisia." Essential music for everyone's Latin jazz collection. Scott Yanow - All Music Guide |
